First of all, what does “energy efficient” even mean? In its most basic terms, the energy efficiency of a window is judged by how efficient of a barrier it makes between the temperature of your home and the temperature of the outside air. In an ideal world, your residential skylights would make a perfect barrier between these two environments. In which case, none of the energy you use to heat your home would be wasted leading to a significant decrease in your utility bills.

Unfortunately, we dont live in such a perfect world, so we must do what we can to get as close as possible to that goal. We do this through multi-pane windows with specific gases filling the spaces between the panes and coating which are applied to the outside of the glass.


Low-E coatings have become very popular over the past few years for their ability to insulate a home from the suns rays. These coatings consist of a metallic layer which is applied to the window panes in order to reflect the suns rays. In addition to keeping the suns rays out in the summer, they also help to keep your homes warmth in during the winter. These coatings are generally available in multiple levels of efficiency with corresponding levels of cost.

Insulating Gases

In addition to the suns rays, heat is also transferred simply by the contact your homes air has with the outside environment through the glass of your residential skylights and other windows. This heat transfer is controlled through the use of multi-pane windows with various gases sealed between the panes. These gases have lower conductivity rates than the air which slows down the conduction of heat, saving you money.
